The process of affecting the visibility of
a website or a web page in a search engine's unpaid results - often referred to
as "natural," "organic," or "earned" results is
called as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). It considers how search engines work,
what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search
engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. It
targets different kinds of search which include image search, local search,
video search and news search.
1. Is it all about ranking??
Ranking alone is no longer
the most important thing. Why? Because ranking only gets you visibility; it
doesn’t equate to conversions, sales, or the coveted revenues. You need to make
sure you rank for keywords that actually drive sales.
For example, if you are
optimizing your bakery business in Pune with the keywords “bakery,” whether you’re
ranked #1 or not you will be surrounded by hundreds of other bakeries when
searched. Not only that, but the person searching could be looking for
something in particular like eggless cakes in Pune and you might not even offer
that. If you optimize a phrase like “eggless cakes in Pune,” now you’re
targeting your exact audience, someone in Pune who is looking for eggless cakes.
Optimizing for a potential client is much more effective than just a high
ranking.
2. Social Media Marketing &
SEO go hand-in-hand, or not?
Social media networks
actually play a huge role in search engine rankings. In 2010, both Google and
Bing have confirmed that Twitter and Facebook mentions play a role in SEO.
Sharing Facebook pages as well as re-tweeting will help ranking your site.
If people like your
content, they will like or share it, which is sending positive signals to
search engines. Ratings and reviews on social profile pages such as Google+ and
twitter are not only influential to search results for local businesses, but also
impact potential new customers as well.
3. Number of times a keyword is
used, helps or not?
The point of optimizing
your site is to focus on relevant terms that will attract your target audience,
not repel them so they’re able to view all your awesome content. So uselessly
putting or stuffing keywords makes no sense, rather getting you higher page
ranking, it can get you penalized.
For example, if you stuff
keywords and your content makes no sense than you might get a good ranking but
eventually your page/site will be penalized. So the focus should be to make
your content right, useful and meaningful.
